“It is true, that a little philosophy inclineth man’s mind to atheism but depth in philosophy bringeth men’s minds about to religion.” It wasn’t until a bit further into the book that I realized that, in a way, this quote described McLauglin’s writing itself - she explores a depth of thought that points skeptics and those whose faith has been shipwrecked by modern arguments against Christianity back toward the beauty and intellectual validity of Christian faith. About half-way through her book, McLaughlin references a famous quote from Francis Bacon, the man who established and popularized the scientific method in the 16th century. In Confronting Christianity, Rebecca McLaughlin looks beneath the veneer of twelve of the most popular modern arguments against the validity of Christianity, and exposes the weaknesses of those arguments in a respectful, deeply insightful and warmly personal way.

Why do we permit so many toxic leaders to hold sway in virtually all arenas of human endeavour?Īs you might suspect, there are no easy answers here. How do we explain that paradoxical scenario, evident in virtually every society from earliest recorded history? It is this: While most of us followers complain about toxic leaders, nonetheless, we almost always stay the course. This article is based on her book, The Allure of Toxic Leaders: Why We Follow Destructive Bosses and Corrupt Politicians – and How We Can Survive Them, Jean Lipman-Blumen (New York: Oxford University Press), 2005.Ī curious paradox surrounds toxic leaders wherever they take the stage, from the executive suite to the religious pulpit. This author has some excellent suggestions. Yet individual and organizations can stop the insidious spread of toxicity, by understanding why we are seduced by the false promises of toxic leaders, and by setting up organizational defence mechanisms to counter the spread of toxicity. Toxic leadership is a growing - and costly - phenomenon. Instead, we observe Spence, as his family does, from the outside, as he transforms from a hubristic academic to an increasingly silent, befuddled and homebound patient. He makes no effort to immerse readers in the inner landscape of Alzheimer’s. But the film is more interested in Alice’s journey – her tragedy, not theirs. In Alice’s case, that means her cancer researcher husband (Alec Baldwin) and their three children. By PantheonĪlzheimer’s inevitably affects the sufferer’s entire circle. And, it finds some relief from despair in the redemptive power of love. Upper West Side Story: ‘Morningside Heights intimately explores both the ravages of the disease and its impacts on family members and other caregivers. In Wishful Drinking-a one-woman show Fisher later adapted into a book-Fisher dug into her complicated relationship with the Star Wars franchise, which both made her a household name and, she jokingly wrote, "ruined" her life. But its best showcase may have been the obituary Fisher wrote for herself. Fisher performed her one-woman stage version of Wishful Drinking on Broadway, which went on to be filmed for HBO and nominated for an Emmy Award. You can see it in her novels (like Postcards from the Edge) you can see it in her memoirs (like The Princess Diarist). Three novels and two memoirs have followed: Delusions of Grandma, Surrender the Pink, The Best Awful, Wishful Drinking and Shockaholic. She starred in countless films, including Shampoo and When Harry Met Sally. She was, at one point, one of Hollywood's most sought-after script doctors, using her signature wit to punch up everything from Sister Act to, yes, Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace.īut especially in her later life, Carrie Fisher was, primarily, a writer-one with an unmistakable voice and self-deprecating humor. Carrie Fisher (19562016) became a cultural icon as Princess Leia in the first Star Wars trilogy. She was a mental health advocate who spoke bravely and publicly about her struggles with bipolar disorder. She was an actress, of course, best known for her role in the Star Wars movies (as well as smaller but no less memorable parts in films like When Harry Met Sally and TV shows like 30 Rock). Carrie Fisher- who died Tuesday, days after suffering a heart attack-packed a whole lot of living into her 60 years on earth. The document that emerged from the Constitutional Convention went far beyond amending the Articles, however. In May 1787, 55 delegates gathered in Philadelphia to address the deficiencies of the Articles of Confederation and the problems that had arisen from this weakened central government. As the first written constitution of the newly independent United States, the Articles of Confederation nominally granted Congress the power to conduct foreign policy, maintain armed forces and coin money.īut in practice, this centralized government body had little authority over the individual states, including no power to levy taxes or regulate commerce, which hampered the new nation’s ability to pay its outstanding debts from the Revolutionary War. And so this is where my research began – with these two anti-heroines, as the ancients might have viewed them, and the desire to understand the world they might have inhabited. Prickled by these injustices, I decided to take two such figures, the infamous Helen of Troy and her sister Klytemnestra, and retell their stories in full, to give a window into their experience, to humanise and vindicate them. And what is more the women, both historical and mythological, who railed against this powerlessness to seize some agency of their own were often vilified in the stories told about them. The ancient world was for many a dangerous and powerless place, and not least for women. But as well as sparking delight and curiosity, I was also confronted with worlds that were unfair, unequal, and quite often unsettling.Īs is common for students of the past, I have often wondered what it would be like to live there, while in the same instant knowing I would not want to. I found myself endlessly fascinated with discovering the ways in which people had lived, the values they had held, the stories they had told. Having always been drawn to myths and legends, I had first embarked upon a BA in Classical Civilisation at the University of Warwick, and fell so much in love with the subject that I stayed on to complete a master’s degree in Ancient Visual and Material Culture. The idea for my debut novel, Daughters of Sparta, came to me while I was studying the cultures of ancient Greece and Rome at university. In her mid-teens, Juana was sent to live with her aunt in Mexico City by then, rumors of her prodigious intellect had spread to the capital and she was presented at the court of a new viceregal couple, Antonio Sebastian de Toledo (the Marquis de Mancera) and Leonor Carreto. In a somewhat dramatic teenage display of commitment to her education, Juana cut off her hair every time she made a mistake in Latin. She asked to be allowed to disguise herself as a man so that she could go to university, but was not given permission and had to continue to tutor herself. Juana taught herself all she could by reading her grandfather’s library and soon mastered logic, Latin and the Aztec language Nahuatl. At the age of three, she followed an older sister to school and convinced a teacher to show her how to read. She was officially registered as “a daughter of the Church” because her parents were unmarried. Juana was born in 1648 in San Miguel Nepantla, Mexico, near Mexico City. In honor of Women’s History Month, I want to honor my favorite (and too-little-known) feminist, Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz, a 17th century nun, poet and scholar. 7/2/2023 0 Comments The chained coffinWe will take a look at each one separately as they are very different.
